James Holden no necesita presentación como productor de música de baile. En 1999 pasó de ser uno más de esos "productores de dormitorio" -de los que trabajan en casa con equipo precario- a firmar un clásico de ahora como es Horizons con el que golpeó a la escena de baile. Después, como casi siempre, vendrían los remixes para sellos reconocidos como Loaded, Bedrock, Positiva, Lost Language, Direction, Nu Life, Hope o Deviant. La clave de su música se descubrió más tarde: Holden usaba únicamente un PC y un software casero y algo anticuado que todo el planeta puede descargarse legalmente a través de Internet. A través de instrumentos old school abría una puerta enorme a las nuevas generaciones de productores.

Estos argumentos técnicos tan primarios no fueron impedimento para que sus tracks fueran utilizados por Djs estrella del tipo Sasha, John Digweed, Pete Tong o Paul Oakenfold. Sasha le pidió que colaborase con él en la realización del álbum Airdrawndagger y, claro, James no pudo negarse. Se puede decir que James Holden se ha hecho un nombre a base de producir imaginativamente. Su sello Border Community se convierte en referencia para todos los amantes de esa controvertida etiqueta llamada "house progressive".

Los trabajos se le multiplican y acaba siendo locutor en Oxygen FM y pinchando en varios clubs de Oxford y alrededores -incluida la famosa y prestigiosa universidad-. Más tarde, los bolos internacionales empiezan a crecer como setas en Norte América -donde Digweed y Sasha ya marcaron el camino en el Twilo neoyorkino-, Asia, Australia y, por supuesto, por las islas británicas y por todo el continente europeo, incluidas residencias en el Kremlin de Ámsterdam y el Passion de UK, y actuaciones regulares en clubs tan diversos como el Plus Soda de Atenas, el legendario Elements londinense, el Slinky (Bournemouth y Bristol). James se mantiene fiel a sus principios y mantiene su residencia en el club que le vio nacer como Dj en Oxford, Slide.

En James Holden, su talento y, sobretodo, su joven edad están depositadas las esperanzas de la crítica housera británica. Sabe conducir una sesión a su terreno, a veces más dubby y otras veces más hipnótico, James Holden domina la pista como nadie. Toma prestados aspectos del techno y del trance más deep, siempre tiene preparado alguno de sus temas para ocasiones especiales. Y sigue remezclando a todo aquel que se lo pida: FC Kahuna, Infusion, Carl A. Finlow, FortDax, Zeta Reticula, Petter, Meta.83, Baby Ford & The Ifach Collective, Luke Chable... Destacan sus dos remezclas más pinchadas en 2004: su revisión del The sky was pink de su amigo Nathan Fake que utiliza para cerrar sus sesiones y la de Planet 7 de System 7 que casi es hasta mejor. Su doble mix Balance es una buena muestra de lo que pincha Holden en sus sesiones que le llevaron en el verano de 2005 a pinchar en varios festivales hispanos de los potentes (Monegros, Creamfields...).

A principios del 2006 Holden es invitado por el sello Resist para editar un cd mix llamado At The Controls con el que ha iniciado una gira de presentación por todo el mundo. Este año ha firmado también con la oficina Cocoon así que su cobertura mediática todavía será más fuerte.
